Spitfire is actively seeking original prose submissions with clear, strong voices. Personal essays, humor, short stories, and flash fiction are all fair game (just please specify the nature of your submission so that it can be properly tagged!). While accepted submissions can come in many shapes and sizes, we particularly like those which have some mark of authenticity—whether it’s a sense of humor that is distinctly you, a deep-rooted truth, a pointed look at the world we live in, or something so unique that we don’t even know how to list it here.

All submissions must be previously unpublished work (we’re not looking for any legal battles here). Submissions may not be longer than 3,500 words (though shorter is absolutely fine!).

To recap, here are some things we are NOT looking for:

  • Poetry.
  • Fanfiction or derivative work of any type.
  • Previously published work.
  • Directionless rants.
  • Excerpts that cannot function as self-sufficient pieces.
  • Works longer than 3,500 words.
  • Pictures of your succulent collection.

Unfortunately, we are not able to pay contributors at this time. Should your work be accepted for publication, you will retain all rights to it after it is initially published at Spitfire. Writers will be notified of their submission’s status as soon as possible.

Think you’re ready to roll? Send your submissions as text in an email to submit@spitfirelitmag.com, following the format below. Please do not send it as an attachment. We worked, like, really hard on this website and would hate to lose it to malware embedded in a Word doc describing all the silly antics your cat is up to. Thanks in advance.

Format for submissions:

Author: (your name)

Email: (email you’d prefer to be contacted at)

Title: (your work’s name)

Genre: (personal essay, flash fiction, etc.)

(text of work here)

Submission Deadlines:

As of December 15, 2018, Spitfire is accepting submissions for its March issue. Submissions will not be accepted after February 15, 2019.
